FIFA Best Award: David Seaman SWEARS at fans after Ronaldinho taunt
DAVID SEAMAN responded to taunts over his Ronaldinho World Cup mishap in good spirits - but did give the finger to those calling after him.
Seaman was attending the FIFA Best Awards last night in London with his wife Frankie Poultney.
But on his way to the venue some fans taunted him with shouts of ‘Ronaldinho’, after he conceded a bizarre free kick against the Brazilian during the 2002 World Cup.
In a video published on Spanish website Marca Seaman is shown laughing at the taunts as he went up an escalator on the south bank in London, before giving them the finger.
Seaman was caught off his line by Ronaldinho from way out as Brazil knocked England out in the quarter-finals.
Michael Owen had given England the lead before Rivaldo struck on the stroke of half time.
Then Ronaldinho scored the incredible free kick before being sent off seven minutes later.
England, though, could’t make the extra man count and were sent home.
"When I hit the ball I wanted to shoot for goal - but maybe not exactly where the ball ended up," said Ronaldinho.
"I had a shot at goal and I got a little lucky.
"Every time I switch on the television and see Seaman playing it reminds me of that moment. It's one I will remember for a long time.
"It was a tough way for England to go out of the World Cup - but I think we proved we were the best team.
"I was really sad when I saw Seaman crying after the game.
"I have always been a big admirer of his, and there was nothing he could do about that goal."
Seaman played the last of his 75 games for England later that year after he conceded directly from a corner against Macedonia and was dropped in favour in of David James.
He also left Arsenal a year later before joining Manchester City on a free transfer with Kevin Keegan as manager.
But he made just 19 appearances for City and announced his immediate retirement while out with an injury in January aged 40.
