Premier League table: Teams compared to last season – Liverpool flying, Newcastle freefall
PREMIER LEAGUE standings look very different to last season, but which teams have climbed and fallen in the table so far?
The Premier League season has already provided plenty of drama after just five games, with a far closer title race in store during this campaign.
Manchester City were expected to dominate proceedings from the first week to the last, but Liverpool and Chelsea have caught the most attention after starting the season with 100 per cent records.
Both sides have massively improved on their starts from last season, with Watford and Bournemouth also among the high-flying sides making an impact.
At the other end of the scale, Newcastle and Burnley have endured a torrid few weeks with Manchester United also down on points compared to this stage last season.
Take a look below to reveal how every Premier League team's points have changed compared to Gameweek 5 in 2017/18.
Promoted teams:
Wolves put another three points on the board to continue their strong start to the season, losing just once in their opening five games.
Cardiff were blown away by Eden Hazard’s display for Chelsea, while Fulham suffered at the hands of reigning champions Manchester City.
17. Newcastle: -8pts
The Magpies have lost four of their opening five fixtures with their only point coming in a goalless draw against new boys Cardiff.
16. Burnley: -7pts
Sean Dyche is struggling to get his Burnley side moving in 2018/19. Joe Hart is performing well, but they look toothless going forward.
15. Huddersfield: -6pts
The Terriers appear to be suffering from the dreaded second season syndrome in the early stages.
14. Manchester United: -4pts
Jose Mourinho is turning the tide with back-to-back wins, but he really needs a long run of form to bring belief back to Old Trafford.
13. Southampton: -4pts
The Saints were perilously close to the drop last season but started the campaign well. Can they turn their early form around?
12. Everton: -2pts
Three draws have placed plenty of question marks over the Toffees. They lack a cut-throat striker, but have plenty of talent in their squad to improve on last year.
11. West Ham: -1pt
A hugely important away win over Everton has averted a crisis in east London. Manuel Pellegrini is off the mark at West Ham.
10. Brighton: +/-0pts
Chris Hughton continues to do a solid job on the south coast.
9. Manchester City: +/-0pts
Pep Guardiola’s men are matching last season’s form step-for-step, but they may be dragged into a closer title fight in 2018/19.
8. Tottenham: +1pt
Spurs have lost two on the bounce but remain ahead of their start last season. Harry Kane is yet to hit top gear.
7. Leicester: +2pts
It’s been an all-or-nothing season for the Foxes so far. Two wins, three losses. Consistency is needed to build on last year.
6. Arsenal: +2pts
The Gunners have failed to make a huge impression so far under Unai Emery, but at least the ship seems to be in calm waters.
5. Watford: +4pts
Four victories out of five games will have the Hornets’ faithful dreaming of a strong season. They started well in the last campaign too.
4. Chelsea: +5pts
A turbulent summer has made way for a terrific start to life under Maurizio Sarri. The Blues have a 100 per cent record and sit top of the table.
3. Crystal Palace: +6pts
Roy Hodgson continues to earn praise for his work in Croydon. Palace had zero points after five games last season.
2. Bournemouth: +7pts
Eddie Howe has got the Cherries purring during the opening games of the season. He will be desperate to keep the wins piling in.
1. Liverpool: +7pts
The Reds had a solid, if unspectacular, start to last season but they’ve come out firing on all cylinders this time around. They look like the ones to watch…
