Liverpool news: Steve Nicol proved wrong by one Reds star - ‘He’s been fantastic’
LIVERPOOL legend Steve Nicol has admitted he was wrong to question the signing of Xherdan Shaqiri.
Shaqiri joined Liverpool from relegated Stoke in July for a fee of around £12million.
The Switzerland international has made just two competitive appearances so far for the Reds but he has impressed off the bench.
In the aftermath of Shaqiri’s arrival at Anfield, Nicol questioned whether he had the right attitude to be a squad player for Jurgen Klopp.
Speaking on ESPN FC in July, Nicol said: “Shaqiri has got ability. That’s not the thing that worries me.
I’ll tell you what, he’s been fantastic every time he’s stepped on the field
“What worries me is his attitude. This is a guy who, to me, looks as though it’s all about him.
“You can look at this Liverpool team under Klopp and you see a chemistry. This guy is going to need to have a huge attitude change.
“He’s going to be coming off the bench. But if he’s doing that with a bad attitude then it negates the ability.”
However, Nicol has this week conceded he was wrong with his assumption on Shaqiri and reckons the 26-year-old will see more game time in the coming weeks.
“To be honest with you, you know who’s going to see more playing time? Shaqiri,” Nicol said.
“I questioned his attitude at the start of the season when Liverpool signed him, whether he’d be happy coming off the bench.
“But I’ll tell you what, he’s been fantastic every time he’s stepped on the field.
“You see him with Switzerland during the week, he was phenomenal.
“Clearly he is enjoying being at Liverpool and that’s only great for Liverpool.
“Again, he can come on and give Mo Salah a break or he can give Mane a break.”
Liverpool have won their first four Premier League games of the season.
They are back in action on Saturday when they face Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday.
Spurs have won three of their four games so far this term.
