Valdes, who plays for Mexican side Morelia, made a derogatory gesture with his eyes before his country’s match with South Korea on Monday.
The player was photographed making the gesture while posing for pictures with a South Korean fan.
The image was widely spread online in South Korea and Valdes eventually issued an apology.
He said: “In relation to the photograph that has appeared on social networks, it was never my intention to offend and I offer my apologies to anyone that could have been offended.”

Yet South Korea had the last laugh after the controversy, as Valdes was the butt of the joke during Chile’s 0-0 draw.
During the match, Valdes went to challenge Tottenham star Son Heung-Min for the ball.
But before he could get close to the Premier League forward, Son flicked the ball stylishly between Valdes’ legs.
Fans on twitter reacted to the post.
One wrote: “Well done Son.. No room for racism in the beautiful game!”
Another put: “That’s a good example how to kick it out”
And a third said: “awesome to see how badly Valdes got humiliated on that one!”
A fourth put: “Makes me love Son and South Korea more since that time they beat Germany in the World Cup and let Mexico go through to the next round. Son is the GOAT.”
