Arsenal news: Gilberto Silva reveals Arsene Wenger problem for Unai Emery
UNAI EMERY’s task at Arsenal was made even harder because of the man he replaced at the Emirates.
Unai Emery says he wants to bring 'control' to Arsenal's play
That is the verdict of Brazil World Cup winner and Arsenal Invincible Gilberto Silva.
Emery was appointed the new Gunners head coach in May following the exit of Arsene Wenger.
Wenger had spent almost 22 years in charge of Arsenal before he left one year before his contract was due to expire.
Arsenal have not challenged for the Premier League title in recent years and finished outside the Champions League qualification places in the last two seasons.
It’s a difficult task because he’s going to replace a man who changed the history of the club
But Gilberto, who played for five years under Wenger, says his former boss changed the face of Arsenal.
And he reckons that makes it even more difficult for new man Emery.
“It’s not easy, it’s not going to be easy for him,” Gilberto told Goal.
“It’s a difficult task because he’s going to replace a man who changed the history of the club.”
Arsenal have won two and lost two of their first four games of the Premier League season.
Former Gunners left-back Nigel Winterburn says people were “naive” to expect Emery to turn it around straight away.
And he says the Spaniard must be given time to completely get his ideas across.
“It’s going to be a slow process,” Winterburn told Goal.
“I think we were a little bit naive if people thought the new manager would come in and everything would be absolutely fine.
“He really needs at least this season to progress, see where we go to.
“It could take a little while because there’s some really good teams in that top four.”
