Liverpool news: Craig Burley names the Reds star who has proved everyone wrong
LIVERPOOL left-back Andy Robertson has proved everyone wrong by becoming a star at Anfield.
That is according to former Chelsea and Scotland midfielder turned pundit Craig Burley.
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull in 2017 for an initial transfer fee of £8million.
The Scotland international initially struggled to break into Jurgen Klopp’s Reds starting XI.
However, once he did, he became a regular and played a big role in leading Liverpool to the Champions League final.
Getting to the Champions League final, people didn’t think he was going to play at Liverpool
Robertson has this week been appointed Scotland’s new captain ahead of their friendly with Belgium and Nations League opener against Albania.
Burley is not confident Alex Mcleish’s side have got what it takes to qualify for Euro 2020.
But he has heaped praise on 24-year-old Robertson who has shown his doubters he is good enough for Liverpool.
“I think there are some bigger concerns for Scotland, i.e. qualifying,” he told ESPN FC.
“But no, his rise has been super over the last 18 months.
“Getting to the Champions League final, people didn’t think he was going to play at Liverpool.
“Not only has he played, he’s played really well.
“He’s one of two or three quality players that Scotland have, they just don’t have enough.
“It’s great for the lad himself, just I don’t know if there’s going to be a big enough supporting cast around him, even with the new format, for Scotland to qualify. We’ll see.”
Scotland boss McLeish has been impressed with the professionality of Robertson.
"Andy is the epitome of a true pro and he sets an amazing example,” he told talkSPORT.
“He’s had rejection before and he’s shown that spirit of never giving up.
"He chose to be a professional footballer and he’s living that dream."
Robertson has made 34 appearances in total for Liverpool, scoring one goal.
