Man Utd news: Gary Neville reveals why he was SHOCKED at United during Tottenham clash
MANCHESTER UNITED legend Gary Neville says he was shocked at his former side’s first-half performance against Tottenham tonight.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho made six changes to the starting XI from the 3-2 loss to Brighton.
Before the game, Neville expected a conservative performance from the hosts at Old Trafford, with a defensive-looking midfield trio of Nemanja Matic, Fred and Ander Herrera.
But in the early stages it was clear Mourinho had sent his side out to attack Tottenham, with Fred shooting wide after just 13 seconds.
Romelu Lukaku wasted a couple of good chances, including missing an open goal after rounding Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The first half an hour is the quickest I’ve seen Manchester United play without the ball in probably six years
And Gary Neville says it was a performance he had not seen from a United side since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
“How different is it to what we expected?,” the Sky Sports pundit said with the score at 0-0 at half time.
“Forget every single thing we said pre-match.
“The first half an hour is the quickest I’ve seen Manchester United play without the ball in probably six years, in terms of their intensity.
"It was something that ‘wow, what happened?’.
“(Compared) to Brighton it was a completely different world, but even to Premier League games we have seen at Old Trafford over the last few years under Louis van Gaal, under David Moyes, and even under Jose Mourinho, that was completely different.
“Absolutely shocked us like you wouldn’t believe with that first five to 10 minutes in terms of what we were seeing.
“The shape, where each player was playing.
"It took us five to 10 minutes to work it out and it was brilliant to watch.
“The game then changed a bit after half an hour, United lost a bit like you would expect.
“Stepped off it a little bit and Tottenham started to grow a little bit too in the game.”
Tottenham started the second half quicker and scored twice in the space of the first seven minutes.
First Harry Kane looped a header in from a corner before Lucas Moura swept home a smart counter attack.
Moura added another late on to condemn United to a heavy 3-0 defeat.
