Man Utd news: Gary Neville criticises Romelu Lukaku for ‘big moment’ vs Tottenham
MANCHESTER UNITED striker Romelu Lukaku has been criticised for a glaring miss in tonight’s Premier League clash at home to Old Trafford.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville says a player of Lukaku’s quality should have put the hosts in front.
The Belgium striker capitalised on a poor pass from Danny Rose and rounded Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
However, his right-footed effort from a tight angle went across the open goal and past the far post.
Neville says he does have sympathy for Lukaku, claiming he would have probably missed it himself.
He should score, there’s no defence, a player of his quality, he should score
But he admits it was a great opportunity at an important time in the game.
“The big chance in the first 25 minutes was Lukaku’s chance,” Gary Neville said.
“Obviously it was a mistake from Tottenham that allowed United in.
“It was Danny Rose, he plays it blind, doesn’t look, doesn’t get a good contact on it as well.
“Look, he should score. I do have a little bit of sympathy for Lukaku in the sense that I feel like I would have missed it myself.
“It’s my right foot and bending away from goal and (Toby) Alderweireld is coming back.
"So it wasn’t as easy as it looked.
“When you just look at it there, it looks simple, it’s absolutely simple.
“He should score, there’s no defence, a player of his quality, he should score.
“It’s a big moment in the game because you get the feeling at this point in the game, Spurs could have gone under if United carried on as they were.
“They were all over them for about 20 minutes.”
Tottenham started the second half quicker and scored twice in the space of the first seven minutes.
First Harry Kane looped a header in from a corner before Lucas Moura swept home a smart counter attack.
Moura added another late on to condemn United to a heavy 3-0 defeat.
