Fernando Alonso in pole position to extend lead over rivals
CHAMPIONSHIP leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari secured pole position for the German Grand Prix, while two-time defending world champion Sebastian Vettel came second in his bid to win his home F1 race for the first time.
Vettel’s Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber, of Australia, was third fastest but will be dropped five places on today’s grid after a gearbox change.
As a result, seven-time champion Michael Schumacher moves up from fourth to third in his Mercedes. McLaren’s Brits Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton start sixth and seventh.
