Kimi Antonelli is the youngest pole-sitter in Grand Prix history after George Russell's qualifying was burdened by a mechanical problem on board his Mercedes. The Brit was forced to pull over at the start of Q3 complaining about a problem on his W17, telling his race engineer Marcus Dudley that he was worried he wouldn't be able to get the car fired up again.

He did, and he managed to nurse it back to the Mercedes garage so that his engineers and mechanics could get to work straight away. It looked for a while unlikely that Russell would be able to get back out on track at all, though he did eventually emerge with just two minutes left on the clock, narrowly enough time for him to make it to the start line and have one single shot at pole.

But he missed out, forced to settle for second place only as Antonelli bore the responsibility of being perhaps his team's only chance of pole superbly. He set the provisionally quickest time with his first run and improved further on the second to make sure no one could stop the Silver Arrows again – becoming the youngest Grand Prix pole-sitter in Formula 1 world championship history in the process, aged 19 years and 202 days.

Lewis Hamilton was best of the rest, out-qualifying team-mate Charles Leclerc for the second time this weekend. And Oscar Piastri got the better of Lando Norris in the other McLaren to be the head car on the third row. Max Verstappen endured another difficult session, his weekend in Shanghai not improving with a P8 result in qualifying.

All eight cars fielded by the top four teams safely made it through to the shootout for pole with no major surprises. That was only narrowly achieved though as Isack Hadjar avoided elimination by the skin of his teeth, with two cars within 0.005 seconds with their final runs in Q2 but just not enough to knock the Red Bull racer out.

The Frenchman may well have been spared by Gabriel Bortoleto who was pushing hard into the final corner when he spun his Audi, causing double-waved yellow flags which ruined the final attempts of several drivers who were still on a lap. Franco Colapinto was the only one in the bottom six who still had a chance to improve and he did so, but was one of those unlucky two to come so close to a Q3 appearance and had to settle for 12th on the grid.
