Former Ferrari chief Jean Todt has offered a rare insight into the condition of iconic F1 driver Michael Schumacher. The seven-time world champion suffered a near fatal skiing accident in France in December 2013, with his family since choosing to keep details of his recovery private.

Todt has been one of the few permitted visitors since the seven-time world champion returned to his home in Switzerland in 2014 after spending months in a medically induced coma.

The pair formed a now famous partnership in F1, with the Frenchman serving as general manager of the Scuderia during Schumacher’s five consecutive world title wins from 2000 to 2004.

The 78-year-old still reportedly watched Grand Prix races with the German legend, but has admitted his friendship with the seven-time world champion has changed. And he acknowledged the decision of wife Corinna, and the couple’s children Mick and Gina, to not release details of his rehabilitation.

“Michael is here, so I don't miss him,” he told L’Equipe. “But he is not the Michael of before. He is different and he is wonderful manner assisted by his wife and children, who protect him.

“His life has changed and I am privileged to be able to share moments with him from time to time. There is nothing more to say. Unfortunately, fate struck ten years ago, and he is no longer the Michael we know from Formula 1."

A Netflix documentary series released in 2021, titled Schumacher, gave viewers an insight into the impact the accident in Grenoble had taken on Corinna and her family. But there was no post-2013 footage included of the 55-year-old.

However, last week he reportedly made his first public appearance since the harrowing incident. Schumacher was said to have attended the wedding of his daughter, 27, to Iain Bethke.

The pair tied the knot at the family’s villa in Majorca, which is situated by the glamorous resort of Port d'Andratx. The ceremony was kept private with guests said to have been forbidden from using mobile phones during the service.

It has not been confirmed whether Todt, 78, was invited to the wedding. He’s no longer directly involved in F1 after his stint as FIA President ended in December 2021 following the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

But it’s his 15-year tenure at Ferrari for which he is best remembered. And he remains revered in Italy, with Schumacher’s championship win in 2000 signifying his former team’s first driver's championship since 1979.
