Angela Cullen has explained that she faced a ‘steep learning curve’ during her time with Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes before walking away from the series during the 2023 campaign.

Cullen joined forces with Hamilton ahead of the 2016 campaign, during which he suffered defeat in the intra-team battle with Nico Rosberg for the Drivers’ Championship title. This outcome sparked a historic run as the duo combined forces to win the following four World Championships.

During their time together, Cullen and Hamilton formed an iconic friendship with the trainer always spotted by his side during race weekends. “I miss her every day,” the Brit said after she departed his camp in 2023. “She was a breath of fresh air for me every day. She was always a great help during the seven years we worked together.

“She was and still is a very good friend. In fact, we’re talking about getting together again and doing something together soon, like parachute jumping, maybe. We’ll never leave each other. I’m very grateful for everything she’s given me.”

After taking a short hiatus from the motorsport world, Cullen returned earlier this year with former Ferrari driver academy starlet Marcus Armstrong, who is navigating his sophomore year with Chip Ganassi Racing in IndyCar.

“I came into motorsport and I went straight to Formula One,” Cullen told the IndyCar YouTube channel. I worked with Lewis Hamilton [and] with Mercedes-Benz for seven years, and so it was a huge learning curve for me. Not only was I learning about the sport, but obviously the demands of motorsport on the drivers.”

Explaining her return to the sport, she added: “So when I left Formula One, I thought I was moving away from motorsport. I retired actually. So I took a year off last year, and then I connected with Marcus Armstrong and I just started working with him on mental skills and things in the background.

“In the offseason, I was sponsored by SOS Hydration, which he was sponsored by as well, and they connected us. He said, ‘Do you want to come to a race?’ and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I’d love to come out.’

“Oh my God, like IndyCar just hit me, it is so much fun, and I just fell in love with it. The racing is incredible, the drivers are incredible, I was overwhelmed by the expertise of everyone in the paddock. So I arrived, and I haven’t left.”
