Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were left chuckling in the post-race press conference after Lewis Hamilton stated that there ‘always will be’ some hostility from Max Verstappen’s side following their collision during the closing stages of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The two former title rivals were scrapping over the final place on the podium when on lap 63, Verstappen lunged down the inside for an ambitious move on the Mercedes driver. Hamilton did his best to avoid contact, but as he prolonged his corner entry, the Red Bull car clipped his rear wheel sending the RB20 airborne.

Hamilton held onto third place and Verstappen was lucky to avoid more significant damage. The Dutchman lost another spot to Charles Leclerc, adding to his frustrations from what was a weekend to forget at the Hungaroring.

Explaining his view of the clash in the post-race press conference, Hamilton said: “From what I can remember, obviously we passed a backmarker. I got to the braking zone, and then Max appeared, to overtake the car behind me, so I moved over to defend.

“I left enough room on the inside, but Max locked up, and he was going a different trajectory to me. I was going towards, around the corner, and he came shooting across. So it felt like a racing incident and it’s easy to make mistakes like that and so I don’t feel there should be any hostility, but of course from his side there always will be.”

This assessment sparked giggles from the two McLaren drivers beside him. Norris has experienced Verstappen’s unapologetic approach to wheel-to-wheel combat recently, suffering a DNF in Austria after the Dutchman moved under braking during a fight at Turn Three.

As was the case with Norris, Verstappen was not in the mood to accept responsibility for his role in the crash with Hamilton. "I got a lot of s*** thrown at me in Austria with people saying moving under braking, blah blah blah," he fumed.

“I am positioning my car on the initial movement and then I keep it straight. Today, under braking he just kept turning to the right and that is why I also locked up because I was going for the move.

“But I saw the car on the outside kept coming at me. Otherwise, we would've already crashed before. I had to stop the car so that is why I locked up."
