Lewis Hamilton has declared 'game on' in the fight for race victories ahead of F1's return to the Hungaroring. The Brit won a record-breaking ninth British Grand Prix last time out, ending a 945-day drought.

Now the Mercedes star heads to another of his specialist circuits. Hamilton has already won eight times at the Hungarian Grand Prix in the past and claimed pole position at the Hungaroring last season in the much-inferior W14.

Optimism in the Mercedes camp, therefore, is high. George Russell also heads into the Hungarian GP weekend with a purpose after suffering a heartbreaking DNF on home soil due to a mechanical issue.

"It's game on," Hamilton declared to the media in Hungary. "We're fighting for wins and we're chasing, and we're going to try and win as many races as George mentioned, or compete for as many wins as possible.

"It might turn out this weekend that the Red Bull still is light years ahead, or the McLaren is still this weekend. Who knows. But I think what we've shown over the last few races is that with determination, with real focus and persistently chasing for perfection and improvement, you can make a difference.

"And so we are united as a team and we're going to try and make sure that we can end the season on a high. And if we can lift the team up in the ladder of constructors... if we can progress, we're not too far off the drivers up ahead of us... then that would be great."

However, while the Mercedes duo's aims are clear, the mood in the garage may not be so clear-cut. Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, technical director James Allison said: “Well we certainly don’t think we won the last one, let’s win the next one.

"It almost makes you a bit more nervous that maintaining that performance we had in Silverstone is going to be very difficult.

“If you look at what is the big difference for Hungary is probably this is the test of whether or not we have got on top of our long-run performance in hot conditions because in Barcelona and in Austria, we couldn’t match Lando or Max on the long run - both those two cars were well ahead of us. We hopefully have made a bit of progress.”
