Lando Norris has described the criticism levelled at McLaren's recent strategy calls as 'not unfair', putting pressure on the Woking-based team to improve at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Brit has been in a position to win on multiple occasions since breaking his duck in Miami back in May, but six races down the line that tally remains unchanged.

McLaren's most notable strategy error came at the Canadian Grand Prix when the safety car wiped out his impressive lead over Max Verstappen. Then at Silverstone, the British constructor hung his team-mate Oscar Piastri out to dry when he was in a position to challenge for the race win.

Asked by Sky Sports F1 whether the criticism being levelled at his team is unjust, he replied: "No, not at all. It just depends on how you take it. I don't think it's unfair because you're always going to have it. That's life.

"People are going to criticise you, people are going to support you. People are going to make mistakes. We're not the only team... there have been times when Red Bull should have won and didn't, and Mercedes should have won and didn't."

Moving onto the pain of Silverstone, he added: "It's a tough one because it hurts when you lose your home race and you have a chance to win and those types of things. But it's more about how we as a team handled it, how we learned from it.

"We reviewed things and we'll be coming back stronger this weekend and for the future races, so yeah, plenty of things to learn. But I'm confident with our team. I think we always accept criticism and especially when it's constructive."

Bernie Collins also raised concerns on the Sky Sports F1 podcast. "Mercedes and Red Bull appear to have the edge in terms of making consistently good decisions as a team," she said. "The Mercedes one was a mistake from the pit wall to call him in and they got away with it because of Lewis.

"As a team, the decisions are really good, the same for Max and GP [Gianpiero Lambiase] for example. I think the build of the relationship with Lando Norris is pretty new and there just doesn't seem to be that trust there.

"So I don't really think it's McLaren not having the experience of it because the midfield battles of making strong decisions is really tough when you're fighting for the points at the end [of the top 10]. It's as big a difference as the win versus P2 in some ways."
