Aston Martin are still no closer to announcing the capture of Adrian Newey as the Red Bull chief designer remains in limbo over his next role in F1. The ambitious British manufacturer confirmed the arrival of Ferrari chassis director Enrico Cardile on Tuesday, as Lawrence Stroll continues to assemble a force of F1 aerodynamic experts to take the team to the next level.

It was reported Newey was on the brink of agreeing to join Aston Martin in June, and it later emerged that he has taken a private tour of the team's state-of-the-art factory in Silverstone. But with no agreement in place, Aston Martin have been working hard to improve the team that could be working alongside him.

Cardile, who worked with Ferrari since 2005 before moving across to their F1 operation in 2016, has been unveiled as the Aston Martin's new chief technical officer. Aston Martin have not yet disclosed when he will be starting the role, but it appears likely the Italian, 49, will busy working on plans for their new car ahead of the 2025 season.

"The ambition and desire [of Aston Martin] are clear and it is a unique opportunity to be part of that journey," Cardile said, speaking to the team's official website. "This is a personal and professional challenge and I look forward to working with the team to bring success to this iconic brand.”

Stroll, the team's billionaire owner and father of their driver Lance, is determined to recruit the best talent available in motorsport to take the challenge to Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes.

He has already poached former Mercedes engine chief Andy Cowell, as he is set to join the team in October. But bringing Newey to lead their Silverstone factory would show Aston Martin mean business ahead of the introduction of new engine regulations in 2026, which many believe will shake up the sport's current pecking order.

Newey, 65, announced he would be stepping down from his role after 19 years with Red Bull ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. Under his tutelage as the team's chief technical officer, Red Bull have dominated the last two seasons - including winning 21 of 22 races in 2023 with their RB19 car.

It was initially suggested that Newey was planning on taking some time away from the sport after devoting more than 40 years to the sport. However, the respected aerodynamicist reeled back those claims soon after, and it is now expected that he will be back in the paddock as early as next year.

Ferrari were thought to be frontrunners to secure his signature as they prepare for a new era with Lewis Hamilton joining the team in 2025. Hamilton has made no secret if his desire to work alongside Newey, but after holding initial talks with Ferrari earlier this season, reports suggest Newey is now closer to staying closer to home with Aston Martin.

Following the British Grand Prix on Sunday, Sky Sports F1 pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz claimed that he witnessed Newey taking sketches of components of the Red Bull RB20 and other cars in the paddock ahead of his next job.
