Lewis Hamilton calls awkward Lando Norris 'lie' into question after F1 showings

Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton is still struggling to keep pace with the top drivers this season

Lando Norris’ alleged ‘lie’ about being the best British driver currently in Formula One is looking more and more like the truth - especially with Lewis Hamilton continuing to struggle. Norris’ spectacular form over the past five races has seen him ascend the Drivers’ Championship standings up to third place.

The McLaren ace’s riveting Canadian Grand Prix display saw him qualify in third place but lead the race twice in difficult wet conditions. He was disappointed to lose out on a second career victory to Max Verstappen after the safety car scuppered his chances with 11 laps to go.

Yet the 24-year-old enjoyed another strong showing in Montreal, as Mercedes duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished behind him in third and fourth respectively. That put Norris well ahead of his fellow Brits in the standings, making him comfortably the most impressive Englishman on the grid this year.

In May, Norris was awkwardly asked during a lie detector segment for Sky Sports F1 whether or not he was the best British driver on the grid ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. After taking several moments to think about it, Norris replied: “Yes,” but was met with a rejection by the lie detector.

Asked who was in fact the best, Norris begrudgingly replied: “Lewis,” paying the seven-time world champion his dues. However, Norris’ fortunes drastically changed that very race as he picked up his maiden F1 win in Miami - while Hamilton has only called his fellow Brit's claim into question with his recent performances.

He has beaten Hamilton in all four of the races since. Norris followed up his victory with an impressive second-placed finish at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and fourth place in Monaco.

Canada was comfortably Hamilton’s best result despite the Ferrari-bound legend admitting it was one of the “worst races” he had ever driven.

The 39-year-old started in seventh and managed to climb into the top five despite the wet track providing minimal margins for error. He found himself in third place after moving ahead of Oscar Piastri but was overtaken by team-mate Russell to deny him his first podium of the season.

“Over the weekend, it was just a really poor performance from myself,” Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. “[During qualifying] some other things came into it, but mostly [from] myself. [On Sunday], it was one of the worst races that I’ve driven.

“Just lots of mistakes but of course if I qualified better, I would have been in a much better position. It is what it is. I’ll go back to the drawing board.”

Hamilton’s record against Russell is 2-2 since Norris’ comments before the race at Miami. However, Russell has managed to accumulate one more point in that period.
