Max Verstappen jokes about retiring next month as Red Bull star eyes milestone
Max Verstappen has joked he will retire when he reaches 100 F1 races.
Red Bull star Max Verstappen is on the verge of making his 100th F1 start at the tender age of 22.
The Dutchman made his F1 debut in 2015 with Toro Rosso and earned promotion to the senior team a year later.
Now the experienced youngster is gearing up for his 99th F1 race at the Mexican Grand Prix next weekend.
He can then made it a century in America the following week.
“What will I do if I reach the 100? Retire!” Verstappen told Yahoo Sport.
“As a child, I always thought that 100 races was a lot in Formula 1.
“My career started very early, of course, and we still want to achieve more. Maybe something like 300 races, 400: who knows?”
Verstappen still has another year to attempt to become the youngest world champion of all time.
He is excelling this season by sitting level in the Drivers’ Championship with Ferrari’s four-time champion Sebastian Vettel.
“I'm just enjoying it right now," Verstappen added.
"All in all, the place we are is not yet the end of the world: We are still in the top six and it is not like we are miles behind the rest.
“We are there, but not enough to really do something.
"The opportunity to grab stages is there, so it's not like I'm not enjoying it.
“Instead of being negative, it's about pushing the team towards improvement. That you find things that lead to improvement."
