Formula 1: Vettel admits Verstappen crash was his mistake
Max Verstappen was furious after Sebastian Vettel smashed into the back of him as the German driver took too much speed into the corner.
Just before the incident Verstappen had passed Vettel around the outside of the fast Stowe corner to take third place in the race.
However, by executing the overtake the Dutchman had run a little wide and gave the four-time world champion an opportunity to continuing fighting for the podium place.
Verstappen covered the inside line on the upcoming corner but Vettel had overcommitted and in trying to stop locked up his brakes before crashing into the back of the Red Bull and in the process sent both cars off the track and into the gravel.
I was still surprised I could finish the race
Vettel appeared to come off worse as the Ferrari driver ended up in last place after making his way back to the pits where the team replaced his front wing.
After officials reviewed the incident the German was given a 10-second time penalty and also had two penalty points added onto his super licence.
After the race the Verstappen revealed what Vettel had said to him after the crash.
“I quickly spoke to Seb out of the car and he apologised,” the 21-year-old said.
“It’s of course a shame that we collided because we were definitely on our way to the podium and the car was working really well.
“I was still surprised I could finish the race with that car because first of all it was a hard hit, over the kerb and into the gravel, all the things you don’t want.
“We managed to score a couple of points.”
After the collision Verstappen managed to nurse his car to the end of the race to take fifth place and in the process picked up 10 points, but the Red Bull driver was surprised he managed to bring the car home at Silverstone after what had happened on the track.

“I honestly don't know how I brought that car to the finish,” Verstappen said.
“My power steering failed, my seat was out, so all the time on the braking I was moving forward.
“In the high-speed corners I was moving left to right and then the car was really neutral.
“When I jumped out of the car the whole floor and rear was destroyed so [I'm] so happy to finish fifth.”
