Sky Sports issued an apology after Mercedes star George Russell appeared to swear in the cooldown room following his Austrian Grand Prix victory on Sunday. The Briton crossed the chequered flag in first position after Red Bull genius Max Verstappen and McLaren ace Lando Norris had collided in the closing stages of the race.

Verstappen and Norris appeared to be in a two-way tussle for the Grand Prix victory with eight laps remaining.

But disaster struck for both drivers when Norris attempted to go round the outside of Verstappen and ended up banging wheels with the champion.

The damage saw Norris’ race come to an end, with Verstappen finishing fifth after being handed a 10-second penalty. And Russell took full advantage of the chaos as he claimed victory ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.

The three podium finishers made their way to the cooldown room as soon as the Grand Prix had come to an end and were seen chatting to each other as they watched highlights of the race on a big screen. And as the trio viewed the decisive collision, Russell appeared to utter the words “oh s***”.

The race winner added: "That was a very cool fight though!" To which Piastri laughed and said: "Well you did just win the race because of it..."

Sky Sports F1 commentator Harry Benjamin then made an apology to viewers due to the bad language picked up by the broadcaster's camera.

Russell’s victory was his first since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in November 2022, with the Briton currently seventh in this year’s Drivers’ Championship standings with 111 points.

And following his triumph in Austria, the 26-year-old explained: “The team have done an amazing job to get us into this fight and you’ve got to be there to pick up the pieces and that’s where we were.

“I couldn’t believe how close [we] were to Max and Lando. It was a possibility - you are always dreaming - but as I said you are so proud to be back on the top step.

“The team have worked so hard, they’ve made so many strides since the start of the season. The last two races have been incredible and there is so more to come.

“It’s no secret with Red Bull and Max, and McLaren with Lando, [who] are [both] still a little bit out in front. But we are always putting ourselves in that third-place position in the last couple of races. If anything happens up front, we will then pick it up. What an exciting time for us.

“We are riding a bit of a wave at the moment, these last three races have been incredible. I think realistically we probably could have won the race in Canada. But this makes up for one too many mistakes on my side.”
