Sebastian Vettel delivers cryptic response when asked about his Ferrari and F1 future
SEBASTIAN VETTEL has refused to commit his long-term future to Formula One, claiming that he will take everything as it comes.
The German is currently fourth in this season’s championship in what has been a rather frustrating campaign for Ferrari, who are yet to win a race.
Vettel was ruled out of Q3 during Austrian Qualifying due to air pressure on his car which set the tone for another disappointing outing.
He later finished fourth at the Red Bull Ring behind winner Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas.
The 32-year-old has admitted that he doesn’t quite know what the future holds for him or Ferrari, despite his hunger for success in the sport that he loves so dearly.
"I love the racing bit of it, standing on the grid, seeing that so many people get excited about what we do collectively, racing these cars,” he told BBC Sport.
"That really does something. It gives me a lot of adrenaline, makes me nervous on Sunday morning when I wake up.
“I still feel different than waking up today or Monday.
"And I want to succeed. I want to make this work [with Ferrari].
“If I will succeed, I don't know, but that's what I want, and that's what determines the future. And what's happening now, but it also depends on where the sport is going, and so on."
Sebastian Vettel is currently 74 points behind leader Lewis Hamilton, meaning he faces an uphill struggle for the rest of the season if he is to topple the Mercedes star.
But that hasn’t stopped him from believing he can turn things around to win the championship.
“I don’t think I have a reason not to believe,” he said when asked if it is still possible.
“But it’s not my number one thought when I go to bed.
“I am looking forward to this race and then looking forward to the next. I think we have a lot of stuff on our list, a lot of work ahead of us and time will tell.
“Obviously the next races until the summer break in general are very crucial.
“But in order to turn things around we need to have a stronger package overall otherwise it’s not enough to just challenge for victory. I think we need to have a package strong enough to demand the victory.”
