Nico Hulkenberg shouted 'GET ME OUT, THERE'S FIRE' in horrific Abu Dhabi Grand Prix crash
NICO HULKENBERG shouted 'get me out, there's fire' after a horrific crash at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix crash.
The Renault driver's car flipped over after a collision with Romain Grosjean on the opening lap of the final race of the season.
Sky Sports pictures showed his stunned team holding their collective breath with the car overturned.
Hulkenberg was asked by a concerned team chief "are you okay Nico?" on the radio.
But a frantic Hulkenberg replied: "Get me out of this fire, there's fire."
Marshalls rushed to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze before getting Hulkenberg out the car.
There was no penalty for Grosjean but he did send a goodwill message over his own radio after the incident.
"I feel very sorry for him but there was nowhere i could go," he told his Haas team, who reassured him he wasn't in the wrong.
While team principal Guenther Steiner explained: "He was worried about Hulkenberg but we told him he's out of the car so he should be back to normal."
The cars were then put under the safety car with no further action taken against Grosjean.
"Grosjean did nothing wrong there. I imagine he was in the blind spot of Hulkenberg there,” said Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle.
"I think that's the right solution for the reasons I've already outlined.”
