Surrey came into their penultimate group game of the competition with a playoff berth well within their grasp although a defeat would likely leave them struggling to make the quarter-finals.
Six teams in the South Division started the day tied on 12 points meaning net run-rate is likely to play a role in the final standings, meaning Surrey were desperate for a dominant win.
And Curran gave them the best possible start with three wickets and three dot balls in the third over of the match, taking the visitors from 20/0 to 20/3.
First, dangerous Australian and Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger skied an attempted drive over mid-off and was caught by opposite number Gareth Batty.

The batsmen crossed and veteran wicket-keeper Phil Mustard survived the next delivery but was then clean-bowled for just nine.
And another Australian, Cameron Bancroft, inside-edged the very next ball onto his stumps to give Curran his third.
Benny Howell survived the hat-trick ball but could not get a run off the remaining two deliveries of the over and Curran walked off with a T20 rarity - a maiden - to go with his three wickets.
The 19-year-old, whose brother Tom also plays for Surrey and appeared twice for England in the T20I format earlier this year, finished with career-best figures of 4/13 from his four overs as Gloucestershire struggled to post an intimidating total.
