Stuart Broad to miss India v England third Test with foot injury: Jos Buttler to bat at 7
STUART BROAD will be replaced by Chris Woakes for England's third Test against India while Jos Buttler will come in as a specialist batsman.
Stuart Broad will miss the third Test while Jos Buttler has been handed an England recall
Broad injured a ligament in his foot during England's 246-run defeat to India in Visakhapatnam.
The 30-year-old has been wearing special boot in order to aid his recovery but captain Alastair Cook warned that playing Broad in Mohali would have been a huge risk.
Woakes' inclusion is one of three changes made by England as Ben Duckett has also been dropped with Buttler coming in to prompt a reshuffle in the batting order.
Ben Duckett was dismissed by Ravi Ashwin in the second innings after a frazzled-looking shot
Moeen Ali will be promoted to 4 while Jonny Bairstow, who retains the wicketkeeping duties, leapfrogs Ben Stokes to the No 5 slot.
But coach Trevor Bayliss backed the 22-year-old Duckett to come back stronger after just 110 runs in his first seven Test innings.
"I think he's got a special talent," Bayliss said after the second Test defeat.
Jos Buttler has not played Test cricket since October 2015
"I think he'll play a lot more for England.
"Every level you get to, you go up. It gets harder and harder, and the step is bigger.
"Ben's working harder than anyone in the nets to try to fix things up, getting himself into a position that he is confident enough to score runs."
All-rounder Zafar Ansari will also miss out although Cook could not confirm whether off-spinner Gareth Batty or an extra seamer in the form of Steven Finn or Jake Ball would replace him.
