He had equalled his career best with a disciplined knock of 42 before falling victim to the new ball bowling of Mohammad Amir.
But it was a familiar mode of dismissal, edging to second slip, and Vince trudged off in dismay.
England were then 257-4 as they fought for a decisive lead on the fourth day of the Third Test.
Vince had enjoyed a 95-run partnership with Joe Root for the third wicket as Pakistan bowled rather negative lines wide of off stump.
Cook played a loose shot to a wide delivery from Sohail Khan and his shot looped to cover point where Yasir Shah took a brilliant diving catch.
The England captain was out for 66, adding only two to his overnight score.
Hales departed in the next over for 54, fending at a ball outside off stump from left-armer Mohammad Amir to be snaffled at second slip by Younis Khan.
By the tea interval England had reached 262-4 with Garry Ballance unbeaten on 21 and Jonny Bairstow two not out.
