Grahams Onions back in the groove for Durham
GRAHAM ONIONS put the disappointment of an unrewarding tour of New Zealand well and truly behind him when rediscovering his wicket-taking touch for Durham yesterday.
The fast-bowling duo will fancy their chances of closing out the game with a day to spare
But the fast bowler, unused by England against the Kiwis, still found himself upstaged by team-mate Chris Rushworth as his county turned the screw on Somerset on day two of their Division One match at Riverside.
Career-best figures of 6-58 from Rushworth eclipsed a nonetheless pleasing return for Onions, who took three of the top four in his 4-41 as Somerset collapsed to 132 all out in reply to Durham’s first-innings 250.
Despite an improved effort with the ball from the visitors as Durham’s second innings limped to 92-8 – a lead of 210 runs – the fast-bowling duo will fancy their chances of closing out the game with a day to spare.
In a delicately poised match at Trent Bridge a century opening stand from Australian Chris Rogers and Sam Robson, and an unbeaten 77 from John Simpson, gave Middlesex the edge over Nottinghamshire.
They were 297-6 when bad light stopped play in reply to the hosts’ first-innings total of 278.
At Headingley, the suffering went on for Yorkshire, who had been rolled for 96 in their first innings, as Sussex put themselves in a solid position, reaching 356 all out and having their hosts 27-1 at the close.
Ed Joyce (92) and Sussex keeper Ben Brown (93) did most of the damage.
