Scottish boxing champion Andrew Tham, 28, tragically passed away three days after being critically injured in a motorbike accident. The fatal collision occurred on the B8039 in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, when Tham's green Kawasaki motorbike collided with a Hyundai Tucson car around 6.50pm last Thursday.

Following the crash, Tham was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he sadly succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. The occupants of the red Hyundai Tucson were taken to Airdrie's University Hospital Monklands for treatment of minor injuries and were subsequently released.

Tham, who first stepped into the professional ring in March 2019, clinched the Scottish featherweight title last September. Despite losing a recent match to George Stewart, his title remained intact as it wasn't up for grabs.

Stewart, shattered by the news, paid tribute to Tham, stating: "It was an absolute honour and a pleasure to share the ring with him two weeks ago – a true warrior. I have no words to describe this devastating news other than heartbreaking."

Fellow professional boxer Joe Ham also expressed his condolences on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Posting a photo of Tham, Ham wrote: "Rest in peace Andy Tham. One of the nicest but toughest boys in the world."

Tham secured his featherweight title by defeating Jack Turner during the 'Battle of the Legends' event featuring Scottish boxing icons Ricky Burns and Willie Limond at the Braehead Arena.

The Braehead Arena, situated near Glasgow, was left reeling after the tragic news of young boxer Andy Tham's death, expressing its condolences on social media. A spokesman said: "Everyone at the Braehead Arena is shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of young boxer Andy Tham. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad time. The team have many fond memories of his fight here in 2023."

Tham's death is the second loss for Scottish boxing in recent weeks, following the April demise of Willie Limond, the esteemed former British and Commonwealth light-welterweight champion, who passed away at the age of 45.

In the wake of the car crash that claimed Tham's life, Sargent Gemma Blackadder has called upon the public for assistance, stating: "Our thoughts are very much with Andrew's family and friends at what is a very difficult time for them."

She continued to appeal for witnesses, saying: "Enquiries into the full circumstances of this crash continue. If you believe you have information that will assist our enquiries or if you have any dashcam footage, please contact 101 quoting incident number 3307 of May 30."
