Boxing news: Andy Ruiz Jr SLAMS doubters with Anthony Joshua taunt
ANDY RUIZ JR has sent out a bold message to his doubters after his stunning victory over former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
Andy Ruiz Jr floored Anthony Joshua FOUR times as he pulled off one of the biggest shocks in the history of heavyweight boxing.
Joshua went into the fight looking to extend his unbeaten professional record to 23 fights, however, not only did Joshua fail to beat Ruiz but his damaging defeat leaves his career in disarray.
His gracious opponent has now hit out at everyone who doubted him before the fight, and claimed that everything that he had predicted ‘came true’.
He said: “We did it, baby. All the people that believed in me, we did it!
"Everything that I said came true. All the doubters, too bad, man.
“We’ve been working really hard, man, really hard.
“I wanted to prove everybody wrong, all the doubters thinking I was going to lose in the third round, first round.
“I was looking at comments, as well. But what do you know, man? I’m the first Mexican heavyweight champion of the world.
“It’s a blessing. I’m still pinching myself to see if this is real, man! Wow. It’s amazing.”
Ruiz has now won 33 of his 34 professional fights and will be the unified WBA, WBO, IBO, and IBF heavyweight champion for a few months at the very least as Eddie Hearn organises a rematch with Joshua.
The 29-year-old stepped in as a late replacement for Jarrell Miller who tested positive for a banned substance, but Ruiz didn’t let Joshua’s tag as favourite put him off.
Former world heavyweight champion David Haye has given his thoughts on the shock result, and outlined why Joshua is now just a ‘mere mortal’.
He told BBC Sport: ”If Anthony Joshua is as healthy and fit as he says he is, then there is something wrong. He needs something in his camp that he didn't have.
"I thought it was a fantastic night of boxing and unfortunately the Brit lost his belts, but this is why I love heavyweight boxing because anything can happen on the night.
"His invincibility has gone and he is now just a mere mortal.
“Now, fighters know they have just got to stick in there against him and keep throwing body shots."
