Fury twice picked himself up off the canvas to take Wilder the distance for only the second time in the American's career.
The Gypsy King dominated large parts of the fight and many pundits had him way ahead on points heading into the final round.
And when Wilder started to throw more explosive shots to try and rescue a result, he landed a perfect right-left combo to send all 6ft9 of Fury crashing to the ground.
The referee's count got to eight when Fury miraculously rose to his feet to see out the final two minutes.
The judges controversially arrived at a split decision but both men were thankful to get out of the brutal match-up unscathed.
Almost every member of Fury's team asked him how he recovered from such a devastating knockdown when he arrived in the changing room.
But he was speechless after being robbed of the win and hugged all of his entourage individually.
“We are both going home to our families safe," Fury said after the fight.
“I said a prayer in the dressing room, I prayed for him to go home safely to his family.
“We are two great heavyweights, never mind anybody else. Me and this man are the two best heavyweights on the planet.
“I said in the build-up to this: he is the biggest puncher in heavyweight history but I've got a fighting spirit and God is with me.
“If God is with you, I don't know how you can lose.
Fury: Many men wouldn't have got up from that knock-down
“I rise to the occasion. Something inside me makes me the man I am.
“I am a realist, I thought I won the fight. I thought most people thought I won the fight.
“We are out and going back to our families, that's the most important thing."
