Wallis: The Queen That Never Was review - Not pretty but endlessly fascinating

Wallis The Queen That Never Was
I urge you watch the excellent though overlong Wallis: The Queen That Never Was (C5, Wednesday) which showed us what happened to the first one, in an intriguing drama-documentary.
Of course, we’re all grown up now when it comes to foreigners, in stark contrast to the 1930s.
Most revelatory was that the film portrayed Wallis Simpson as a “victim” of the relationship rather than the pursuer. We will never known the absolute truth, but this put a good case for it through her letters.
It seems extraordinary to suggest now that Wallis was somehow caught in a net in this relationship from which she couldn’t escape.
“I fought a losing battle,” she insisted.
You could argue the Royal family were rather unforgiving; only seven guests turned up at the wedding and the couple lived in effective exile for the rest of their lives.
It’s not a pretty story, but one which is endlessly fascinating.
