Prime Video fans devastated as 'breath of fresh air' drama axed after one season
The series has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, and its cancellation has left fans open-mouthed.
Streaming giant Prime Video,has quietly cancelled a drama hailed an "emotional rollercoaster" after just one season. Deadline reported the eight-episode series, which follows a newly-divorced woman and a recently widowed man as they explore the prospect of a romantic future. The series only premiered at the start of 2026, but it has been widely reported it will not be returning for a second outing, leaving the couple's fate a mystery.
It's Not Like That is the series in question, sitting alongside major hits like Clarkson's Farm, with Deadline sharing: "The cancellation of It’s Not Like That is somewhat surprising. In addition to its strong reviews, it seems to have been doing well. Prime Video is not releasing viewership numbers, but it started putting out weekly Top 10 rankings, and the first one, which came out June 3, featured It’s Not Like That at No. 9 on the global series list."
The Express has contacted Prime Video for clarification on the cancellation, which has left fans fuming.
On X, formerly Twitter, one said: "@PrimeVideo what is this you are doing, cancelling #ItsNotLikeThat ??!!! Great TV. Great writing! Great talent! We have loved this. Why are you doing this?! Bring it back! Bring it back!"
Over on Reddit, another added: "I actually found it charming and was hoping for more. It was extremely corny, though."
The finale saw recently widowed minister Malcolm (played by Scott Foley) finally professing his feelings for Lori (Erinn Hayes), however, it turned out to only be in his head.
Fans will never learn whether Malcolm finally decided to reveal his true feelings for Lori.
Before the show's cancellation, one fan said on IMDb reviews that they would be "absolutely devastated" if it was not renewed. They shared: "I love everything about this show, and will be absolutely devastated if it's not renewed!! It was a beautiful ride through faith, family, friendship, love, relationships."
Another viewer commented: "It's not overly dramatised and doesn't give you that feeling that the producers are trying too hard for ratings.
"Character development met with healthy emotional moments had me reflecting on my own life and really connecting with the families and their circumstances.
"It was a breath of fresh air in the sense that families of all ages could watch this together without having any inappropriate content to worry about."
A final fan begged: "Please renew this! This show is so raw and emotional and everything I didn't know that I needed right now. I cried, I laughed, I felt all the emotions with these 2 families."
