'Dark and twisted' crime drama hailed the next Vera is 'absolute masterpiece'
Vera fans have been urged to watch a disturbing series inspired by harrowing true events.
Fans of crime dramas and detective series like Vera must add a dark series to their watch lists, with fans hailing it an "absolute masterpiece". The limited series is based on the book series of the same name by David Peace and it is made up of three feature-length episodes, which originally aired in 2009. Two episodes of the series use fictionalised accounts of the investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper, an infamous serial killer in the 1970s and 1980s.
The name of the series, Red Riding Trilogy, refers to the murder locations, with the historic county of Yorkshire being divided into three areas known as 'ridings'. Set in Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, and the rest of West Yorkshire, the episodes follow several recurring fictional characters "through a bleak and violent world of police corruption and organised crime".
The series was listed by a fan responding to a Reddit question about what to watch after Vera as a viewer was keen to fill the void.
Andrew Garfield stars as Eddie Dunford, an ambitious young reporter who investigates the disappearances of missing girls.
Tip Toe star David Morrissey plays Detective Superintendent Maurice Jobson, who faces a lot of personal battles.
Sean Bean plays John Dawson, a businessman who has spun a deep web of corruption involving local politicians.
Viewers took to IMDb reviews to share their thoughts on the series, with one saying of the first episode: "This is the first of the Red Riding Trilogy and I have to say it's a masterpiece.
"Some of the most gripping stuff I've ever seen on screen, the acting is top notch and story is...dark...very dark. Can't recommend it enough."
Another viewer penned: "The best part of the movie is its very brutal and yet twisted ending that is filmed in a very intense way."
A third fan called it "UK drama at its best", adding: "Please take the time to binge watch this... If you liked 'True Crime' you won't be disappointed."
A final viewer hailed it "gripping and horrifically fascinating", adding: "It's not often that a drama makes me really keen to read the original books but this series did.
"Having lived through those times, I found it weird to remember the atmosphere created by the Yorkshire Ripper murders, and the unrelenting sexism and misogyny faced by women back then, which is far from over-exaggerated in the screenplay."
