CNN halted for breaking Trump bombshell in humiliating blow to president
The US president has been dealt a fresh blow leaving him "furious".
CNN interrupted their live coverage to address the ongoing US-Israeli conflict in Iran. The broadcasters discussed the relationship between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel's latest strikes on Lebanon and Iran has caused tensions.
Trump had publicly warned Israel not to strike Beirut in its war with Iran-backed Hezbollah militants. When it did, on Sunday, Iran responded by firing ballistic missiles at Israel for the first time since the April ceasefire. Israel then struck Iran, with which Trump has been engaged in weeks of high-stakes negotiations.
The conflict has since died down, but the differences between the two leaders are likely to persist. On Monday, the US president warned Netanyahu that he might find himself fighting on his own if Israel returns to war with Iran. In an interview with Axios, the US leader said he had warned Netanyahu about the consequences of continuing the war. “I said, ‘Bibi, you better be careful, or you will be on your own very soon’,” Trump said.
In a humiliating blow, CNN's Fareed Zakaria suggested, "Trump is furious the war is going badly".
Host Erin Burnett asked: "What's the reality of their relationship right now?"
Addressing Trump's phone call with Netanyahu, her colleague claimed the president was "letting off steam".
"He reads the polls like the rest of us," Zakaria continued. "He's frustrated because the war is not going the way he or Prime Minister Netanyahu expected it to go."
He added, "The real story or the way to read it, is Trump is furious that the war is going badly. It is not in any way fulfilling the political goals he thought he was going to achieve. There is some frustration of Netanyahu."
Zakaria suggested Trump is disappointed he was unable to transform the Iranian regime as initially planned.
Israel has halted attacks on Iran, Israeli Prime Minister said, stopping short of acknowledging a ceasefire that Trump said the countries were aiming for.
Iran has also suspended its operations against Israel but warned it would resume them if Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon continued. Separately, a top Iranian official told CNN that Tehran has “no problem” pushing forward with peace talks, so long as Iran is confident that the US side is being honest and sincere.
