Period drama enthusiasts have been urged to binge a series that is completely free to watch.

The White Queen first graced BBC screens in 2013, starring Rebecca Ferguson, Amanda Hale, Faye Marsay and Juliet Aubrey, and is now readily available on Channel 4.

The acclaimed drama charts the lives of the women embroiled in the Wars of the Roses and the bitter struggle for the English throne.

Adapted from Philippa Gregory's three novels, which together form The Cousins' War series, the show is set from the 1460s onwards, as the nation tears itself apart over who holds the rightful claim to the crown, with the House of York and the House of Lancaster locked in fierce battle.

The story centres on Elizabeth Woodville (Rebecca Ferguson), wife of King Edward IV, Margaret Beaufort (Amanda Hale), mother of King Henry VII, and Anne Nevill (Faye Marsay), wife of King Richard III, reports the Mirror.

All three women are locked in a fierce struggle to secure power for themselves and their families, each seeking to bend the tumultuous events unfolding around them to their own advantage.

Channel 4 has teased it as a "gripping drama set during the turmoil of The War of the Roses," with the synopsis reading: "Riveting historical drama with Rebecca Ferguson. Seduction, betrayal and murder prove potent tools in a plot for power. First series in a trilogy following the fascinating lives of England's queens."

The White Queen earned huge praise when it first aired, and was nominated for three Golden Globes, four Primetime Emmy awards and a People's Choice award.

One fan praised: "I am absolutely obsessed with this show! I love it and cannot get enough!"

Another called it "one of the best TV shows I've ever seen", while someone else said: "I was utterly drawn in by the series from episode 1."

One fan added: "Pretty impressive! I rate this almost as highly as Game of Thrones. A must-watched destined for IMDb 9s."

"Probably the best thing on TV to watch and enjoy," someone else said, adding: "From the first 10 minutes of watching my eyes were glued to the TV."

Though the BBC period drama aired as a limited series, fans have been left begging for more.

One said: "Please keep it going. I gave this series a 10 for excellent, that's exactly how I feel about it. Would love to see what happens next!!!"

"I love this series and sincerely hope for more seasons," another said.

After filming the series, The Greatest Showman actress Rebecca recalled her casting being "an absolute rollercoaster", as she opened up about her role.

She also told SeenIt that there was one moment where she was left with blood pouring down her leg, revealing: "In episode one I had a scene with King Edward (Max Irons). I had to grab his dagger from his belt, which was very sharp. So the stunt coordinator taught me how to hold the knife, but what we hadn't discussed were the little studs on Max's belt!

"So in the kerfuffle and me trying to grab the knife correctly, there is blood pouring down my leg caused by the studs – I thought wasn't it his knife I was supposed to be worrying about! And to this day I still have the scar – a lasting memory."
