Things took a heartbreaking turn on Friday's Beyond Paradise as Humphrey Goodman (played by Kris Marshall) appeared to make his final decision about who would leave the Shipton Abbott police force.

The detective was finally forced to come clean to his colleagues after his boss pushed him for an answer about who would be leaving.

Much to his surprise, Humphrey's colleagues were all very supportive and each offered to leave themselves so the detective wouldn't need to make the decision.

"I will back your decision, whatever you decide," Esther reassured him, as Margo added, "We all will."

Towards the end of the episode and after solving their latest case, Humphrey went to see his boss to inform him of his decision.

"I assume you have made your decision," James said, to which Humphrey handed him a folder.

"I have," the detective explained as James asked, "So, who is it to be?"

Without saying a word, the duo just smiled at each other. However, in the teaser for next week's final episode, Anne spoke to Martha about Humphrey.

"He seems quite chipper considering the circumstances," she said, cutting to another clip of Humphrey saying, "New starts all round."

"I can't work with this, Mr. Smith," Kelby then raged before Esther said to Humphrey, seemingly confirming it is the detective leaving the force, "This can't really be it."

The synopsis for next week's episode also seems to confirm Humphrey's fate as it reads, "It's Humphrey's last day as detective inspector, and the whole team is eagerly awaiting the town's annual pirate festival.

"Danger, however, is ahoy when Geraldine Desai's nautical exhibition goes up in smoke, leading to the ancient treasure map of pirate Elias Cutler going missing amid the chaos.

"On the trail of the missing map, Humphrey soon has suspicions when he discovers that Geraldine has been selling her memorabilia to pay for her husband's care and recently had the map revalued."
