I'm a TV writer - this is the best thing I've watched in 2025
OPINION: I've watched a fair amount of TV in my time, and 2025 has birthed a few unexpected hits and misses

I’ve been a TV reporter for four years. In that time, I’ve seen the birth – and death – of everything from game shows to reality shows to gritty dramas. 2025 has been no different. We’ve seen the end (at least for now) of ITV’s iconic Dancing on Ice, the addition of Rob Rinder’s new reality project The Inheritance, and the mixed response to gritty historical drama King and Conqueror.
For me, though, one series stuck out for me so far this year. The award for the best series I’ve watched in 2025 goes to the third series of BBC comedy Here We Go. Written by Tom Basden of Plebs, the lighthearted sitcom follows the Jessop family through the trials and tribulations of daily life. It’s one of those rare sitcoms that still has heart – with real emotion, real laughs and a stellar cast.

The third series had it all – a bottle episode taking place in Malta, some bombshell family drama and the addition of a new character. It’s definitely worth a watch if you’re a comedy fan.
That said, honourable mention has to go to Rob Brydon’s newest game show Destination X. I have to admit, I wasn’t even trying to watch it. I was busy reading with the show on in the background, but the concept soon tore me away from the page.
Say what you will about Rob’s rather cringe Claudia Winkleman impression, but Destination X – borrowed from the American format – has enough twists and turns, and fun puzzles, to keep me interested. As a big fan of escape rooms, it was perfect.

Another Traitors-style rip-off, The Inheritance, has also tickled my fancy. Elizabeth Hurley may be as wooden as a big spoon, but the truly vicious cast and the lengths they’re willing to go to lend the show an element of je ne sais quoi.
There have been some clangers, too. The second series of BBC sitcom Such Brave Girls was depressing on a brand new level. I’m halfway through the newly released Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping and it’s such a far cry from Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look that I’m having to actually skip through some of the worst skits.
But go and give Here We Go a watch. You won’t regret it.
