BBC Breakfast viewers were left raging during a report into a review into the water industry which has called for the regulator Ofwat to be scrapped and replaced with a single more powerful body. The once in a generation review of the sector has advised that the system for regulating water companies in England and Wales should be overhauled and replaced with one single body in the UK and another in Wales.

Jon Kay and Sally Nugent spoke to Water Minister Emma Hardy after Sir Jon Cuncliffe, who led the review, said on the show that water regulator Ofwat "has failed". This follows a proposed hike in bills from water companies, with some to rise by another 30% in the next five years. wateSally and Jon also spoke to David Henderson from Water UK, a representative for water companies, as they asked why the boss of Southern Water received a total pay package worth more than one million pounds.

However, despite the fury over senior water company bosses receiving such a huge salary every year, some viewers couldn't help pointing out the hypocrisy of Sally and Jon hitting out at their pay.

One person posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Presenters who get paid £250k a year to read an autocue, horrified at how much people are being paid in the water industry."

Another added: "I wonder why the people on the TV, movies etc need to be paid as much as they do. For example, is being a tv presenter such a special job that requires a salary of £250k? especially when that is largely paid from compulsory license fees (tax)."

A third agreed: "The irony of 2 presenters on 250k for a 3 day week complaining about water company pay."

A fourth stated: "It's quite something to see David Henderson from @WaterUK justifying the pay of water company bosses. Any service that was once a publicly run service should not command a salary higher than the Prime Minister. End of."

The BBC 2024/2025 salary report stated that Jon earns £240,000-£244,999, while Sally earns slightly less at £200,000-£204,999.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC1.
