Casualty: Rich tells Siobhan McKenzie they need time apart

Casualty's Clinical Lead Siobhan McKenzie (played by Melanie Hill) is "blindsided" in the latest installment of the long running BBC medical drama tonght (August 10) when her husband Rich Walker (played by Michael Keogh) tells her he needs some space.

Unbeknownst to her he has been having an affair with her colleague Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless).

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Melanie opened up about how she is affected by the bombshell realisation her marriage is crumbling. "At the beginning, she's literally massively blindsided," Melanie admits.

"I think it's one of those things a lot of couples could identify with. The fact that if you've been with somebody for a long time, you have both been concentrating on work, sometimes you forget to leave time for each other and keep that spark and love going, which I think is important," she admitted.

"They're both workaholics. He wasn't looking for love. I don't think he's a philanderer. He's basically just fallen for Stevie hard and didn't really want this to happen. And I think he does love Siobhan and I think it's a massive shock," she pondered.

Although firefighter Rich was seeing Stevie the doctor called it off as the guilt was too much for her. Siobhan is currently unaware that her colleague is the reason for her husband's sudden unhappiness in his marriage. However she admits it will be a hard blow when it comes out.

"I think that's a double whammy because I don't think she'd ever, ever think that. And I think Stevie and her have been through quite a lot together since she's joined the ED and they've got quite close.

"They've worked in quite tense situations. It's the nature of working in an ED. You've got to trust each other and you go through some really life shattering moments with people who have been brought into the ED facing the worst day of their lives.

"I think people that work together to have a certain camaraderie and that's what's making it really horrible for Stevie and for Siobhan. There's no winners in this triangle. It's tough," she admits.

While Siobhan may be struggling and still has some tough times ahead, Melanie is thoroughly enjoying this latest development for her character.

"I was ecstatic when it was explained to me this was coming down the line. I knew when I took the job this was all going to be unraveled and and I was going to get to do some of this wonderful stuff.

"But each script that comes out - I just think they are so well written. All the characters are so diverse in Casualty that [all members of] the British public can identify with [at least] one character in it or what they're going through.

"And that's why I think it's really important that to have continuing drama [on TV]. That throwback to sitting around with a family and talking about things that happen in families and bringing up sensitive subjects like the current abuse storyline," she said.

Due to the Olympics Casualty is on BBC Two at 8.10pm tonight (August 10). Previous episodes are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
