Kate Garraway reveals she has 'regrets'
Kate Garraway has spoken out for the first time about her husband Derek Draper's death during an emotional appearance on Good Morning Britain. The TV presenter's family and friends gathered to support her at Derek's funeral at the Church of St Mary The Virgin, in Primrose Hill, on Friday.
Her husband of almost 20 years died on January 3 following a three-year health battle, having been seriously ill with long Covid since 2020 and suffering a cardiac arrest in December. He died due to complications from the illness.
Speaking with Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid on Monday's GMB, Kate spoke about her final moments with Derek, as well as her regrets since her husband became ill.
After detailing her daughter Darcey's final words to her dad, the ITV host shared: "Two things struck me when I was with Derek and when they [doctors] said: 'This has happened and we don't think he's going to last a day.' I thought: 'Right, I have to tell the children and get them close to him and me.'
"And I sort of said it factually and said at the end: 'Have you any questions?' and the first thing Darcey said was: 'How are you, Mum?' and I said: 'Gosh, that's a lovely question Darcey and thank you for asking it,' because what an extraordinary thing.
"And when he did pass, I was actually on my own with him and I came out of the room and told the children that he had, and I said to them that: 'Dad has actually gone' and Billy said: 'I am so sorry, mum.'
"And I thought: 'My goodness, they have really taken on board a caring role.'"
Praising Derek's carers, Kate went on: "Professional carers, they're so skilled but they're doing it out of spirit, of honour, love and goodness.
"I guess I present the sort of non-professional scrambling carers of which as we know, every day, at least 12 people take on caring for a loved one for the first time.

"Many of those, nearly half give up work to do it ... there is so much that needs to change."
She later added: "I think for a lot of people watching, they will know two things really that they're in a caring position, how unbelievably hard it is, but what an honour it is too ... how much I wish I was caring today."
The ITV host struggled to hold back tears as she shared her regrets: "It's an incredible thing to be that line of defence against the world and what happens to us all in life, to be able to be that person for somebody is the ultimate honour and privilege.
"I know I didn't get it all right, and I know I have lots of regrets of things I should have done more of ... spent less time fretting about but it is a huge honour and it is something that builds your life forever."
Kate's last appearance on GMB was on December 8. In that same week, Derek flew to Mexico for specialist treatment and suffered a cardiac arrest.
His health then took a turn for the worse and Kate announced on January 5 that he had lost battle with long Covid.
Kate will return to her role on GMB on Thursday.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
