The Grand Tour: Producer reveals huge cost of insuring stars

The Grand Tour showcased its brand new feature-length special Seamen in December. This time, instead of hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May traversing the world in cars, they took boats. Exploring the regions of Cambodia and Vietnam, the trio delved into boat-life like never before.

Since the first special’s release, fans have been longing for yet another special to arrive on Amazon Prime Video.

So far, there isn’t a date for the next special - which is to be set in Madagascar.

But since then, The Grand Tour’s executive producer Andy Wilman has spoken out about the preparation needed for each show and special.

Speaking on The Media Show podcast, Andy was asked a number of questions by its host Amol Rajan.

One of which was regarding the risk assessment required to keep the hosts safe throughout their journeys.

He asked: “What sort of risk assessment do you have to undertake before letting three multimillionaires set sail on tropical waters?”

To which Andy responded: “It’s got bigger because Richard Hammond keeps crashing and bumping into things so the risk assessment gets bigger, the premium goes up all the time.”

Eager for more information, Amol continued to grill the showrunner, asking: “Have you got huge insurance policies? Give us a sense of how big.”

GMB: James May praises the new Top Gear line-up

Andy continued: “It’s mental. I could make a special that we used to make on Top Gear for what we now pay on insurance.”

Teasing the amount of money he was talking about, Andy added: “Five noughts, it’s in that area with the premiums now.”

Amol then questioned the necessity of the insurance, asking if the hosts were ever truly in danger.

“Yeah it is genuinely dangerous,” Andy replied. “Because they do their things, we don’t get a stuntman in.”

Responding to the continuing questions regarding the release schedule, they wrote: “Just to let you know. Yes, another special is coming.”

The account then went on to reveal which country the special will be set, along with some other details.

They wrote: “We’ve finished filming in Madagascar. No, we don’t know when it’s coming out yet.

“Yes, Season 4 is made up of epic specials. No, they’re not released weekly.

“Yes, we’ll have more info in due course. #TheGrandTour.”

Until the announcement, viewers will have to keep rematching The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen.

The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen is available on Amazon Prime Video now.
