The BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who will be breaking with tradition this year with the Christmas special not airing on December 25. Doctor Who has been broadcasting a festive episode of the sci-fi series for the last 13 years since it was reboot by Russell T. Davies in 2005. But this is the first time that Doctor Who won’t be airing on Christmas Day.
When will the Doctor Who Christmas special 2018 air?
The Doctor Who Christmas special 2018 will be airing on New Year’s Day: Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
BBC One will be airing the episode as usual but no time has yet been given for the festive special.
This is the first time since the era of David Tennant’s 10th Time Lord that the series has aired on New Year’s Day.
“We’re thrilled to be starting the New Year with a bang on BBC One, as Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and friends face a terrifying alien threat in an action packed, hour long special adventure for all the family,” Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall said.
While the BBC executive Charlotte Moore added: “We’re delighted the Doctor and her companions will be welcoming BBC One audiences into 2019 with this exciting new episode.
“The Doctor's fans are in for a special treat on the first day of the new year.”
What will happen in Doctor Who Christmas special 2018?
Only a few details have been revealed about the festive special.
However, the BBC has released a short synopsis, which reads: “As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring, from across the centuries of Earth’s history.
“As the Doctor (played by Jodie Whittaker), Ryan (Tosin Cole), Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?”
From the episode summary, it sounds like Doctor Who fans will get a classic alien invasion Earth story.
But fans will have to wait and see how this enemy manifests itself.
Who is in the cast of the Doctor Who Christmas special 2018?
Jodie Whittaker will be reprising her role as the 13th Time Lord as she faces the threat head-on.
Bradley Walsh will be back as Graham O’Brien, one of the Doctor’s friends who will be helping her.
Tosin Cole will come back as Ryan Sinclair, hoping to help save the Earth.
Finally, Mandip Gill will be joining them as Yaz Khan.
We can also expect some guest stars to be joining the regular cast for the Christmas special.
Is there a trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special 2018?
There’s no trailer as yet for the Doctor Who Christmas special as the current series still airing.
But it’s highly likely that a teaser will be dropping after the season 11 finale.
In previous years, Doctor Who has been given a sneak peek of the festive special on Children In Need but its not known whether they will be any teaser clips on the charity telethon this year.
