The Walking Dead: First look at 'What Comes After'
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Walking Dead season 9 episode 5: What Comes After.
Rick Grimes’ (played by Andrew Lincoln) journey in The Walking Dead is far from over, despite fans watching the favourite being lead away in a helicopter in episode five, titled What Comes After.
In the episode, the lead character survived being impaled by a steel rod and blown off the bridge in a explosion, before he was rescued by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) and taken away in a mysterious helicopter.
Now, Scott M. Gimple, The Walking Dead’s chief content officer, has revealed his plans to have Andrew star in a series of Rick Grimes led AMC movies.
We are telling Rick’s story in another medium and it’s going to be these AMC Studios original films.
The 47-year-old said the films would be a continuation of Rick’s story and would unveil what happens after the helicopter flight.
Teasing the project, he explained: “We are telling Rick’s story in another medium and it’s going to be these AMC Studios original films.”
“They’re going to be on AMC, most probably,” he revealed. “They’re centred around Rick Grimes.”
Explaining the theme of the films, he told Entertainment Weekly: “We’re going to tell the story of what happens after that helicopter flight and these are going to be big, epic entertainments. Each are quality films.
“That’s what’s been happening in the industry. We’ve seen Netflix make these, basically, studio films for people to watch in their homes, and we’re going to be doing the same sort of thing here.”
He went on to say he has already began working on the first film and would start filming next year, although he refused to reveal the release date.
Speaking about how many films he intends to make, Scott divulged: “We are talking about a trilogy for this Rick Grimes story.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the only Rick Grimes stories we’re ever going to tell and also they’re probably not going to be the only movies that we tell.
“The Rick Grimes story, of course, is the biggest thing that we’re doing right off the bat, but we’re going to be doing a number of different Walking Dead things over the next few years.”
The television writer also said they would not be releasing the movies all at once and would put the films out over the years.
Hinting that characters such as Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) would return for the movie edition, Scott continued: “We’re going to see the past, we’re going to see old characters.
“We’re going to move into the future with new characters. We’re doing films, we’re doing specials. We’re going to be looking at new series and even just different expressions of series.”
Elsewhere, fans went into meltdown upon hearing about the films, with one tweeting: “They played us. AMC is making The Walking Dead movie with Grimes wow!”
Another wrote: “So The Walking Dead hyped up the end of Rick Grimes just to have him live, with the plan that they’re going to make TV movies about Rick. Hilarious.”
A third enthused: “Oh my God! Rick Grimes MOVIES are coming in the future. Y’all oh my God I can’t wait for this… thank you The Walking Dead.”(sic)
