One in three diabetics at health risk
THOUSANDS of diabetics in Britain are risking blindness, heart disease and kidney failure because their blood sugar levels are not under control, figures out today reveal.
An analysis of more than two million diabetics in the UK found 797,067, or 34 per cent, were not hitting their recommended blood glucose levels.
Douglas Smallwood, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: “Diabetes complications cost the NHS about £1million an hour and can have a devastating effect on people’s quality of life.
“It is vital that all of the 2.6 million people with diabetes are armed with the knowledge and confidence to manage their diabetes effectively.”

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation found few people knew the difference between Type 1, an autoimmune condition, and Type 2, which is linked to unhealthy lifestyles.
