QT: Audience member calls out Keir Starmer over 'freebies'

A BBC Question Time audience member has brilliantly destroyed Sir Keir Starmer over the freebies row with a nine-word comment.

The Question Time panel was discussing the free gifts row surrounding the Prime Minister before an audience member jumped in saying: “It's fascinating for me how much honesty goes on at the Government when it comes to gifts, because these are personal gifts as far as I can see.”

“It's only Keir Starmer that's wearing the suits. It's only him going to the Taylor Swift concerts.”

Ian Murray who is the Labour MP for Edinburgh South was then quick to claim that “there is no dishonesty here,” adding: “There is no lawbreaking here. This is all transparent on the public register.”

The audience member then argued back saying “does it affect his tax returns?” before she destroyed Sir Keir by saying “he knows about every penny that I have got”.

Question Time was being held in Dundee on Thursday with Fiona Bruce discussing the UK’s hottest politics topics with experts and politicians.

The BBC presenter was joined by Wendy Chamberlain who is the Deputy Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and the SMP for North East Fife, Ian MacWhirter who is a columnist for The Times and Spectator, Jenny Gilruth who is the MSP for Fife and Glenrothes, Andrew Bowie who is the Conservative MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, and Ian Murray.

The panel discussed several issues including the row engulfing the Labour Party regarding freebies.

It was reported yesterday that Sir Keir Starmer took some decisive action to restore his reputation by repaying £6,000 for a series of high-profile gifts received since he became Prime Minister.

The repayment included six tickets to a Taylor Swift concert, four tickets to horse races, and a rental agreement for clothing from a luxury designer.

The Prime Minister’s move came amid mounting scrutiny regarding the close connections between the government and wealthy donors, particularly after he, along with members of his Cabinet - including Rachel Reeves and Angela Rayner - faced backlash for accepting lavish gifts.

Ms Rayner has been caught up in a new row over her Ibiza partying after she admitted declaring £836 in hospitality expenses for a visit to a DJ booth during her trip in August.

The declaration, listed under Ayita LLC, relates to a night at the popular nightclub Hi Ibiza, where Labour's Deputy Prime Minister was filmed dancing and singing.

Ms Rayner has since defended her decision to enjoy herself while on holiday, telling Sky News: "I was on holiday for a couple of days, I mean you can criticise my dancing, it is subjective.

"I take my job really seriously and what I do and I'm always in Parliament and I'm always doing what needs to be done and I'll continue to do that.

"But I also believe as a former trade unionist that ... you've got to have downtime as well. Everybody has to have downtime.

"But I do take my job really seriously and like to talk about what I'm doing to help other people."
