A BRITISH tourist was seriously injured in a freak accident when she was struck by a wooden hammock which plummeted from a New York skyscraper.

The 48-year-old was strolling with her husband in Lower Manhattan when the hammock was blown off a fifth-floor terrace by the wind, witnesses said.
The woman was injured when the outdoor furniture fell to the street shortly before 5pm local time.
A witness said a man who was walking alongside the victim cried: ““It fell! It hit her!”

Another said: “I heard a loud boom, and when I ran out, I saw a hammock on the sidewalk and the woman lying down right next to the hammock.
“She couldn’t move. She’s in bad shape. Her left leg was twisted up.”

Police believe wind may have blown the wooden framed hammock off the 18-storey building’s terrace.

The woman, who was reportedly walking on the pavement towards the World Trade Centre before the incident, was rushed to hospital.
She was conscious and reported pain to her head and back. Her husband was believed to have escaped uninjured.

There was no high wind warning on Tuesday, as winds were not expected to exceed 25mph.
Building owners in New York are advised to secure loose objects when wind gusts are stronger than 45mph.
Officials said an investigation was ongoing.
