'NATO's helped terrorism THRIVE' German MP backs Trump's criticism of military alliance
DONALD Trump was right to label Nato as “obsolete” and the military alliance has even helped terrorism evolve, a German MP has claimed.
Wolfgang Gehrke slammed Nato for not doing enough
The President-elect has blasted Nato on several occasions through the Presidential campaign, citing that only five of the 28 countries paid the required two per cent of GDP agreed upon by member nations.
Wolfgang Gehrke agreed with Trump’s damning criticism of Nato and claimed the alliance had made the world a more unstable place.
Michael Gove interviewed Donald Trump earlier this week
Their war against terror has fostered terror
The Bundestag MP said: "Of course, Nato is outdated. It has not achieved any constructive results. It has aggravated crises.
“Their war against terror has fostered terror. We are in favour of dissolving Nato and replacing it with a European security system.”
The left-wing politician seemingly supported Trump’s assumed position that he would like to improve relations with Putin.
He said: “It would be nice to have an American president who understands that the United States and Russia should jointly take responsibility for what is happening in the world."
Mr Gehrke blasted the build-up of Nato’s military forces and troops in central and eastern Europe.
He added: “As the Left Party, we can't turn a blind eye to this situation. I would call for more pressure, what concerns the dissolution of NATO. I would also eagerly discuss the idea of who should make the greatest contribution to disarmament.”
But Trump again took aim at Nato in an interview with Michael Gove earlier this week, labelling the organisation as “obsolete”.
Donald Trump's five key pledges
Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th President of the US tomorrow
During the joint interview for The Time and German newspaper Bild, Trump said: "I said a long time ago that NATO had problems. Number one it was obsolete, because it was designed many, many years ago.
“Number two the countries aren't paying what they're supposed to pay. I took such heat, when I said NATO was obsolete. It's obsolete because it wasn't taking care of terror.”
Mike Pence moved to allay fears that Nato might be disbanded, insisting it will remain an important military check on Russian power.
The Vice President-elect said: “That historic mission of Nato will go forward. I’m confident.”
