The 56-year-old was discovered on the shoreline at the beach in the town of Mojacar - home of the late Great Train Robber Gordon Goody - around 10am on Saturday.
A local enjoying a morning stroll called police after making the gruesome discovery.
It was unclear today how the unnamed Brit had died because although a post-mortem is understood to have taken place over the weekend, the results have not been made public.

She is understood to have been staying in a nearby beach-front hotel.

Mojacar, in the province of Almeria in south east Spain, was the home for years of Gordon Goody.
His remains were cremated in the resort in January after he died aged 86.
The town is popular with Brit expats and tourists.
Earlier this year council chiefs announced they were banning hen party and stag do revellers from walking around town with “obscene and rude” objects including giant penises and inflatable dolls.
