THE PRESIDENT of Nigeria hit out at criticism from his own wife - by saying she "belongs" to his kitchen.

Muhammadu Buhari was responding to a question over an interview Mrs Buhari gave to the BBC in which she claimed she might not back him at the next election.
His spouse said Mr Buhari must make changes to his leadership style to gain her support.

In response the African nation leader laughed before saying she "belongs to my kitchen" - while standing alongside Angela Merkel, German Chancellor.
He said: "I don't know which party my wife belongs to my kitchen, and my living room, and the other room."

Mr Buhari shocked the press conference with the sexist comment which was held in Germany.
In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari, the First Lady, suggested Buhari's Government had been hijacked by only a "few people", who were behind presidential appointments.
She said the president did not know most of the officials he had appointed.

She said: "A lot of people have been coming on their own, and also collectively, to tell him that things are not going the way it should.
"I have my own right to say something, if it continues like this I am not going to be part of any movement again."
Mrs Buhari was prompted to to speak out in an effort to end those practices so that party loyalists who contributed to his election victory could benefit.
Her critics say she is speaking out only because she failed to convince the president to appoint her own people.
