Gang attacks tourists in Italy
A gang of men badly beat a Dutch couple and raped the woman while they camped in an isolated field outside Rome during a cycling tour of Europe, Italian police said.
The Carabinieri paramilitary police said three or four men struck when the married couple, both in their fifties, were asleep in a tent at Ponte Galeria, an area on the Tiber River between Rome and the sea.
The two were being treated for shock and multiple fractures at Rome's San Camillo hospital.
Carabinieri Capt Fabrizio Cassatella said the attackers also stole some 1,500 euro.
Later the Italian news agency ANSA reported police had arrested two Romanian shepherds for the attack and said the two were recognised by the couple in a line-up.
Carabinieri officers were not available to confirm the report.
