British woman dies of suspected altitude sickness while trekking near Everest
A BRITISH woman has died while trekking in Nepal's Everest region.
Local police official Purushottam Silwal told the Daily Mirror: "She possibly died of altitude sickness. Her body was airlifted to Kathmandu for a post-mortem."
It is believed she may have fallen ill while returning from a trip to Everest base camp, at 5,364 metres (17,700 feet) above sea level, with her daughter.
The Foreign Office said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Nepal on October 6, 2014.
"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."
Nepal is a popular destination with trekkers around the world.
Altitude sickness comes on as a result of ascending too quickly, and can cause headaches, dizziness and nausea.
